Our gas, heating and plumbing services
07. Quotes and estimates
- A quote is a fixed price for the work described. It is valid for 30 days unless we say otherwise.
- An estimate is our best guess of the cost based on what we know. The final price may change if the job turns out to be different from what was expected.
- If we find extra work is needed, or you ask for changes, we will tell you the extra cost and get your agreement before carrying on.
08. Booking and access
- A contract is formed when you accept our quote or estimate and we confirm the booking.
- You agree to give us safe and reasonable access to the property, along with gas, water and electricity, at the agreed time.
- If we cannot get access at the agreed time, we may charge a reasonable call out fee to cover our lost time.
- Arrival times are estimates. We will let you know as soon as we can if we are running late or need to rearrange.
09. Prices and payment
- All prices are in pounds sterling. Where VAT applies, it will be added at the current rate and shown clearly on your quote and invoice.
- For larger jobs, such as boiler or heating installations, we may ask for a deposit of up to 50% before work starts, to cover materials.
- For all other work, payment is due on completion unless we agree otherwise in writing. Where we send an invoice, payment is due within 7 days of the invoice date.
- You can pay by bank transfer or any other method shown on your invoice.
- If payment is late, we may charge interest at 4% a year above the Bank of England base rate and recover our reasonable costs of collecting the debt.
- Materials we supply remain our property until they are paid for in full.
10. Cancelling or rearranging
- Please give us at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or rearrange. For shorter notice we may charge a reasonable fee to cover our lost time.
- If you cancel after we have ordered special or made to order materials, you will need to pay for those materials.
- Your legal right to cancel: if you are a consumer and you book with us by phone, online or in your home, you normally have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. If you ask us to start work within those 14 days, you will need to pay for the work done up to the point you cancel, and you lose the right to cancel once the work is fully completed. This right does not apply to urgent repairs or maintenance that you have specifically asked us to visit for.
11. Emergency call outs
Emergency and out of hours call outs are charged at our emergency rate, which we will confirm when you call. On an emergency visit our first priority is to make things safe. A permanent repair may need a follow up visit, which we will quote for separately.
12. Gas safety
- All gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers.
- If we find a gas appliance or installation that is unsafe, we are required by law to follow the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure. This may mean turning off or disconnecting the appliance or the gas supply and labelling it as unsafe, even if you have not asked us to work on it. We are not responsible for any loss or inconvenience this causes.
- Where work needs to be notified to Gas Safe Register or Building Control, we will do this and you will receive the certificate by post or email.
13. Our work and your responsibilities
- We will carry out all work with reasonable care and skill, in line with the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and relevant regulations.
- Please move furniture, valuables and personal belongings away from the work area before we arrive.
- Please tell us about anything that could affect the work, such as known problems with the property, asbestos, or previous work carried out by others.
- We are not responsible for existing faults in pipework, fittings, appliances or the structure of the property, or for problems caused by these that we could not reasonably have spotted. Older heating systems can develop leaks or faults when drained, flushed or put under pressure, and we are not responsible for these where we have taken reasonable care.
- If you ask us to fit parts or materials that you have supplied, we do not guarantee those items and are not responsible if they are faulty.
14. Guarantee
- We guarantee our workmanship for 12 months from the date the work is completed.
- Boilers, parts and appliances we supply are covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Boiler warranties usually require an annual service to stay valid.
- The guarantee does not cover fair wear and tear, misuse, accidental damage, blockages, work or repairs carried out by anyone else, or customer supplied parts.
- The guarantee only applies once our invoice has been paid in full.
- This guarantee is in addition to your legal rights and does not affect them.
15. Our liability
- Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. If you are a consumer, nothing in these terms affects your legal rights.
- We are responsible for loss or damage that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or not using reasonable care and skill.
- We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable, for business losses where you are a consumer, or for delays or problems caused by things outside our reasonable control, such as severe weather, supplier delays or illness.
- We hold public liability insurance.
16. Complaints
If you are not happy with our work, please call 07307 271800 or email info@giles-gas.co.uk as soon as possible and give us the chance to inspect and put things right. We aim to respond to all complaints within 5 working days.
17. General
- We may update these terms from time to time. The terms that apply to your job are the ones in place when you booked.
- If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales will deal with any disputes.
